The Student Show

So now I can relax and enjoy the show. Shown here is the "Student Quilt." Each student creates one or more small squares, this year the theme, loosely observed, was birds, butterflies and leaves. The squares are glued onto a paper backing, (I use a very strong and light Japanese paper) and then sewn together using a zig zag stitch. (Of course one waits until the glue is very dry before sewing) The quilt is then glued onto a wooden panel. The edges of the panel are painted, the panel is then coated with several layers of protective varnish and the quilt is wired for hanging. Every year the quilt is raffled off in aid to the Garden Education Center. A beautiful garden oasis in the center of Greenwich. The show, "Closely Observed 3", the third annual show, will hang through December 19th. The Center's hours are Monday through Friday, 9 to 3.30 pm. Closed on the weekends. It is a beautiful show.

A Night Owl

It's been a very busy week with the opening of my Students' show, yesterday. A very big thank you to all who helped with the hanging and the opening, all who came to the show and to all who bought! Thank you, Thank you, it was a wonderful afternoon. More show details to follow but here is a picture of me earlier this week.

Personal Maps

Over the Summer I was lucky enough to take a workshop with the delightful Connie Brown, an amazing mapmaker, at www.redstonestudios.com. Inspired by Connie and by the very different but equally charming site, www.theydrawandtravel.com, I decided it was time to do a personal map making project with my class. So here is the Best of Greenwich, covering Greenwich proper in map 1 and Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich in map 2. Suggestions for highlights to be added to these maps are always welcome.  (Click on the individual maps to make them a little bigger.)

"Family Tree" at the Garden Education Center in Greenwich

I am currently in a show, "Branching Out", at the Garden Education Center of Greenwich. This exhibition, sponsored by the Education Center, the Greenwich Arts Council and the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, celebrates the wonderful collection of Trees at the Garden Center. It will hang until October 29th. Fifty percent of the sale price will be donated to support these three great organizations. This is a painting of the tree that I chose to paint, a Japanese White Pine Tree, with some of the inhabitants of the GEC. Acrylic on Canvas, 12 x 12, framed in a floater frame. $800.
