First it was Sandy and then the snow storm and this morning ice crystals on the windshield. Winter is approaching fast so time for the first snow scene of the season. The first image is loosely based on a photo taken by a friend in Jackson Hole.

Getting Ready
A very dull and Autumnal Wednesday. A good day to spend at home getting ready for my student show which will open November 14th at the Garden Education Center of Greenwich. Hanging on November 13th and official artists' opening on Sunday, the 2nd of December, 2 to 4pm. The show will hang until the end of January. Thankfully we are survived Sandy, battered, cold but in tact. Now we can look forward to a small celebration. Yeah.

Animal portraits this time - the Toucan
Moving from self portraits to animals portraits. A quick warm up exercise using one color, black and white to encourage thinking in terms of negative space, values and fluid lines.

One more self portrait in the Japanese idiom for the Bruce Portrait show. The Submission limit is 10. Now I really must take my small collection over this week.

Another self portrait for the same project. This time in collage, including a Metro North timetable for hair, part of a map, a Tazo Earl Grey tea bag for the shadows, part of the Financial Times and of course some of my favorite Japanese "running script" paper. I drew first, painted a little and then reached for he glue stick.....
A Second Self Portrait.
The Bruce is limiting each artist to 10 submissions. After my first effort, I decided I had had it with realism. In keeping with my long term love affair with Japan, this seemed a little closer to the true me.

The Bruce Museum is sponsoring a community self portrait project. The public is invited to submit self portraits, the only constraints being that they must be anonymous and they must be 6 x 6". So last weekend I began. This was my first effort, in what I describe as the "German Expressionist Nightmare" genre.....

A rare view of the Lesser Spotted Random Basket Weaver Bird upon her nest. In my paper weaving class last weekend I learnt how to weave a random basket beginning with a pentangle structure. Here you can see the nest resting on a paper mache cactus.
The Finished Product
The finished product - after a lot of help and encouragement. While I will never be a basket maker it will be very interesting to see where this goes. I can definitely see combining paper weaving with paper mâché.
The Chaos of Supplies
Paper everywhere, not that it was chaos at all. In fact it was a wonderful peek into the amazing world of paper weaving and basketry.
